A FEW HISTORICAL FACTS

LISBON

Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in western Europe. After the region was settled by the Celts, it was then founded by the Phoenicians.

They established a settlement called Ulissipo, which was then conquered by the Greeks and Carthaginians.

In 205 BC, the Romans won the Second Punic War against the Carthaginians and occupied the city, calling it Olissipo.

Ancient Lisbon was integrated into the Roman province of Lusitania, but when the Roman Empire collapsed, it was invaded by Germanic tribes and was controlled by the Kingdom of the Suebi until 585.

SEVILLE

According to the most credible version, the city was founded by the Tartessos community who lived in the Guadalquivir valley, and later it was populated by the Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians.

In 205 BC, Seville was usurped from the Carthaginians by the Romans during the Second Punic War, and for two centuries it lived through the turbulent history of a Roman city.

In 43 BC, the city was taken by Julius Caesar, who changed its name to 'Lulia Romuela' or 'Romula', and it became one of the most important cities in the Roman province of Hispania Baetica, being Christianized towards the end of the empire.

After the fall of Rome, it was occupied by Silingi vandals, until they were banished by the Visigoths, who made the city one of the capitals of their kingdom. This was when one of Seville's most novel experiences took place: Hermenegildo betrayed his father, King Leovigildo and sieged the city, changing the river course.

MADRID

Muhammed I, Emir of Córdoba from 852 to 886, commissioned the construction of a fortress on the banks of the Manzanares River and called it “Mayrit”.

The stronghold was built where the Royal Palace of Madrid presently sits. The citadel was strategically built on top of a hill, with views over the Sierra de Guadarrama. From this location, the Moors could organize incursions against the northern Christian kingdoms. This practical construction became the origin of Madrid.

The meaning of “Mayrit” isn’t completely clear, although it seems to be the hybrid of two place names; “matrice” meaning fountain in Mozarabic language and “majrà”, meaning riverbed or course of a river in Arabic. Both words refer to the abundance of water, rivers and groundwater there was in this part of Spain.

BARCELONA

The earliest historical data in Barcelona begins with the first human remains in the area, dating back to 2500 BC and the existence of the first settlement dates from between 2000 and 1500 BC.

According to Rufo Festo Avieno, a Latin poet born at the end of the fourth century, Barcelona and its surroundings was home to two Iberian villages: one on Mont Tàber, whose name is unknown.

This hamlet has been called Barcilo, Barcinom or Barkeno by various historians and is believed to be the origin of the name Barcelona. The other settlement was called Laye and was founded on Montjüic. It was inhabited by the Laietani.

LISBON TRAVEL GUIDE

Often overlooked for its popular European cousins, Lisbon specializes in lulling tourists into its laid-back charm. Perched atop seven hills, its alleyways wind between colorful, centuries-old buildings. Fanciful St. George's Castle peeks out to the skyline, lending an Old World-mystery to the burgeoning cosmopolitan city. And despite the modern sleek buildings that are slowly rising throughout the city, village life holds strong.

But there's more to Lisbon than lazing about in coffee shops nibbling pastéis de nata (custard tarts) all day: From exploring the Fado clubs in Bairro Alto to taking in the view at the top of the Santa Justa Elevator; from laying out at the Cascais beaches to treasure hunting at the historic Feira da Ladra flea market; from gazing at the gargantuan displays at the Oceanarium to gorging on bacalhau (salted cod); Portugal's coastal capital is rich with opportunity.

SEVILLE TRAVEL GUIDE

The passion of a flamenco dancer, the dedication of a bullfighting matador and the laid-back indulgence of an afternoon siesta are not merely romanticized memories of a long-ago Spain. These cultural traditions are prominent aspects of life in Seville and throughout the country's southernmost Andalusia region. A city marked by Jewish, Islamic and Christian influences, Seville shows evidence of each religion's presence in its church facades, minarets and former ghettos. Travelers who appreciate a good dose of history between leisurely strolls along narrow streets and relaxed, drawn-out meals will swoon over Seville's centuries-old neighborhoods and cultural offerings.

MADRID TRAVEL GUIDE

Spain's capital since 1561, Madrid has been the beating heart of this southern European country for almost 500 years – longer than most countries have even existed. In many ways, it can be compared to other international capitals – it's Spain's biggest city, has the country's largest population and is the center for international business. But if you listen carefully, you might hear the alluring strings of a Spanish guitar, the clicking of a flamenco dancer's castanet, and the swish of a bullfighter's red cape. Yes, Madrid is for travelers interested in famous paintings and stunning architecture, but it's also, and maybe more so, for those looking for passion turned into art, and a taste of life lived with color and intensity.

BARCELONA TRAVEL GUIDE

Barcelona contains both the authentically historic and the wildly bizarre. From the scenic trails of the colorful Park Güell to the romantic narrow alleys of the Barri Gòtic, this city by the sea seems to attract all types – the adventurer, the romantic, the partier, the culture lover – with an almost overwhelming variety of things to do. You could stay for a few days exploring its architectural marvels, but chances are you'll need a whole week to explore.

And while the beach lures locals and visitors in droves, it’s the cosmopolitan city that really dazzles. Much of the activity revolves around the Ciutat Vella (or Old City), a series of narrow streets and alleys packed with restaurants, cafes and nightclubs, and the home of Las Ramblas – the wide, tree-lined thoroughfare that’s long been the hub of the city.
